Wow after Locnville and Jax Panik kicked off the first Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert 2011/2012, the second concert surely will get everyone in the mood for more music!

The second Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert features Jack Parow, Van Coke Kartel, Heuwels Fantasties and JR. It is going to be a mini music festival where Afro beat and disco house meet Afrikaans rock and rap.

Van Coke Kartel: Musicians Francois van Coke, Wynand Myburgh, Hunter Kennedy and Pierre Greeff grew up in Bellville and played in many bands over the years, of which Fokofpolisiekar is the best known. When Fokofpolisiekar took a break in 2007, the Afikaans rock bands Van Coke Cartel and Die Heuwels Fantasties were formed. Both groups have since won several music awards. Van Coke Kartel will also introduce the new album at Kirstenbosch.

Jack Parow Jack Parow is an Afrikaans rapper, from Belville. His debut self titled album was released in 2010 and debut single, Cooler as ekke, has become his most recognizable song with over 1 million views on YouTube. His songs are hits on national radio stations and he has been on prime TV shows and on covers and centre-folds of publications in South Africa and in Europe.

So grab your friends and get down to Kirstenbosch on 27 Nov 2011 to the tunes of  Jack Parow, Van Coke Kartel, Heuwels Fantasties and JR. I strongly feel the show is R- rated, parental guidance is advised due to the use of strong language during the concert performance.

Best Dim Sum Spot (According to Cape Town Asian) - Sheng Feng Chinese Restaurant

When we get asked, “Where do we get good dim sum in Cape Town?” The answer usually is: Sheng Feng. Many dim sum newbies probably don't know about this place, but many Chinese foodie people do. Sheng Feng has been serving Cantonese Chinese food in Cape Town for couple of years.

The restaurant is spacious, airy with simple Chinese decor. You will find Chinese family gatherings during the weekend.

I can't compare the dim sum with Hong Kong or even Joburg, but I have tried dim sum all over Cape Town and Sheng Feng is possibly the best I have had. The restaurant is a no frills place but the dim sum is traditional and fresh. In true Hong Kong style, you mark the dim sum that you want from a menu form that is both in Chinese and English. The menu is diverse with a range of sweet to savory dishes. They have about 40 different types of items on the menu.

Some highlights on the menu include the shrimp rice noodle roll, steamed shrimp dumpling (Har Gau) and pork siu mai. Possibly their best dish is the pork buns (Cha Siu Bao). For dessert, I always order steamed custard buns and fried Man Tau. My personal favorites were the congee and Singapore rice noodles.

I find it's best to choose one or two dishes at a time (depending on the size of your group). Prices vary from R18-R30 per plate depending on size and ingredients of the dishes, and most have 2-3 pieces per serving.

Service was decent although you need to track down the server sometimes about the food. And in some cases the language barrier prevents you from knowing what is in some of the items. Unless you speak Mandarin or Cantonese.

Our bill is normally around R70 per person (including tips, tea and leftovers!), which is really affordable!

Dim sum is served everyday from 11am-2pm. Dim sum aficionados know to hit Sheng Feng early in the day for the best selection because after 1 p.m. selections aren't quite as numerous.

Some of my table's favourites:

Steamed Shrimp Dumpling or Har Gow were four medium-sized bites of dim sum. Shrimp was fresh, possessed a light aroma of sesame oil. Wrapper was nicely done.

Steamed custard bun filled with pleasant creamy custard flavour. 

Char Siu Bao (Honey Roasted Pork Bun) - probably the best bao ever in Cape Town.

The pork shai mai is excellent. 

Deep Fried Sesame seed ball arrived freshly made. Hot with a thick skin but just the right sweetness of azuki beans (red beans) filling.

A plate of pan-fried turnip cake came in four pieces. The texture of the turnip cake is smooth in the inside and crispy on the outside. The turnip flavour is actually quite light. 

Spring Onion Pancake. Almost like the Chinese version of roti but will flavour of spring onion. Best to dip with a bit of soy sauce and some raw chilli.

Singapore Rice Noodles. My favourite rice noodles. Stir-fried with curry powder, baby shrimp, honey roasted pork, and veggies. The rice vermicelli is fluffy and flavourful but not spicy.

Char Siu Rice Noodle Roll (or cheong fun) had diced honey roasted pork, chewy rice noodle wrapper, and a nice sweet soy sauce. Try the Shrimp cheong fun for their big and fresh prawns.

Sticky Rice Wrapped in Lotus Leaf was very good. Glutinous rice was cooked fine, with lots of filling, including a small egg yolk, shitake mushroom, minced mung beans and pork inside.

Fried Dough Bun (Man Tau) – I specifically asked for deep fried bun with sweet condensed milk for dipping. They normally do the steamed one. Awesome dish, very good when fresh and hot.

2nd Scavenger Hunt @ Camps Bay

If you missed the first scavenger hunt then save this date for the second one - 20 November!

The organizer, Gumball 4 Pix Photography, decided to be more specific about the location of the scavenger hunt this time around so Camps Bay's beach front and back streets seems perfect!

Hmm....maybe one of the words will be Asian tourist?

The rule is simple, you will receive a carefully compiled list of interesting words to take pictures of upon arrival. And you hunt for them!

Because everyone has their own ideas and interpretations words, the ideas is that everyone should take a picture of the listed words as they interpret it.

Like the first event, anyone may join, you don't need a fancy camera, even you and your cellphone can join the fun!
